Privacy Policy
Pie: Split the Bill · Effective October 24, 2026
The short version: Pie has no accounts, no ads and no tracking. Pie reads receipts on your phone. A receipt photo is sent to Anthropic's Claude AI only when Pie can't read it on your phone and you allow it, only to read the items and prices, and Pie doesn't keep it. Your splits stay on your phone, and on iPhone in your own iCloud if you turn on sync.
Pie is available for iPhone and Android. This policy covers both; where they differ, it says so.
Receipt photos
Pie first reads each receipt on your phone, using Apple's built-in text recognition; that photo never leaves your phone. Only when Pie can't read a receipt on your phone, and only after you allow it, Pie sends that photo to Pie's server, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude AI along with these instructions. Claude sends back the item names, prices, tax, tip, fees and total, and the server returns them to your phone.
On Android, Pie reads receipts on your phone with Google's ML Kit text recognition, which runs on the device; that photo never leaves your phone. A receipt Pie can't read is handled exactly as above: sent to Pie's server and Claude only after you allow it, and not kept.
- Pie's server does not save photos or what Claude reads from them.
- Anthropic handles the photo under its commercial terms. It does not use this data to train its models by default and keeps it only for a limited time. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
- Nothing else is sent with the photo: no name, contacts, location or account.
Information the server sees briefly
Like any website, the server sees your device's IP address when you scan. Pie uses it only to limit how many scans one device can make per minute, to prevent abuse. Pie's server logs record that a scan happened and how many items were found, not the photo or its contents. The server runs on Cloudflare, which processes requests under its own privacy policy.
Your splits and settings
Bills, items, people's names, who has paid and your settings (including payment usernames you enter) are stored on your device. If you turn on iCloud sync, Apple stores your splits in your private iCloud account so they appear on your other devices. Pie's developer cannot see your iCloud data. On Android, everything stays only on your phone; there is no iCloud or other sync. Payment reminders (PieSplit Pro) are scheduled by your phone itself; nothing about them is sent anywhere.
The friends you split with are saved as People on your device (and in your iCloud if sync is on). If you link a friend to a contact, you pick that one contact in Apple's contact picker; Pie only sees the contact you choose and never reads your whole address book.
Payment requests
When you request money, Pie opens Venmo or your phone's share sheet with a message you choose to send. Pie doesn't process payments or see your payment accounts.
Purchases
PieSplit Pro is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment; Pie only learns whether PieSplit Pro is unlocked on your Apple Account and never sees your payment details. PieSplit Pro is not sold on Android yet. The optional "Buy Me a Slice" tip link opens a web page outside the app, whose payment provider handles that tip under its own privacy policy.
Children
Pie is not directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their information.
Deleting your data
Delete a bill by swiping left on it in History, or delete everything by removing the app. If iCloud sync is on, you can also remove Pie's data in Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage. On Android, swipe a split in History to delete it, or uninstall Pie to remove everything.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
